EARTH & Starbucks Ethiopia
Donation: €25.000
The two schools that EARTH supports together with Starbucks are part of Splash’s WISE - WASH in Schools for Everyone - project. The goal of the WISE project is to provide every government school in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Kolkata (India) with better sanitation and infrastructure, but also to teach hygiene and provide information about menstruation in these schools. The goal is to reach 1 million children by the year 2023.
It is difficult to accurately map the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Project WISE. The schools in Addis Ababa have been closed since March and the number of infections in the country has increased further in the past period. While the work on the infrastructure has been able to continue, teaching the children was of course not possible. The current situation naturally made the work very difficult and the reopening of the schools is eagerly awaited so that evaluation and monitoring can be carried out quickly. The water quality can then also be measured quickly and possibly improved.
Eweket Amba Addis Ketema Kindergarten
This primary school has 106 pupils and is located on a private property where 4 families also live. Before Splash started this project, there was 1 large stone water station for drinking and washing hands. However, most of the taps were broken and there was no filter system to guarantee clean drinking water. Thanks to the help of EARTH and Starbucks, the school was able to install both a new filter system and new (child-friendly) taps. The school already had space for storing 5,000 liters of water, which is sufficient for all students and staff. Thanks to the filter system and taps, this can now be used optimally. When the schools reopen, Splash will continue with the educational part where they teach the children (and teachers) about life-saving adjustments in their hygiene. It sounds simple, but it is incredibly important that the children and teachers wash their hands very well in the environment in which they are.
Eweket Amba Addis Ketema Primary School
This school has 440 students divided over groups 1 to 8. The school is located near one of the largest markets in Ethiopia. Before Splash took care of this school, there was 1 water tap station and a dilapidated hand washing station. The school had too little water storage, which meant that there was not always access to clean drinking water. There was also no water filter system to clean the water.
With the support of EARTH and Starbucks, the school now has access to 10,000 liters of clean water, a water filter system and a beautiful drinking and hand washing station. When the schools reopen, they will start teaching the children about hygiene. They do this in collaboration with the teachers and the school's 'hygiene club'.
